Drains are one of those plumbing fixtures that people tend not to think about unless they develop some sort of problem. While it’s certainly a good idea to call for repairs as soon as you notice a problem with your drains, that’s not the only time you should have them professionally cleaned.
Techniques and Prevention
For many years, the most popular method of drain cleaning was to use a drain snake. This involved inserting a long cord into the drain, with an auger at the end of it. When the auger met a clog, it would drill through it to open up the flow of water through the pipe. While this was great for clogs that were already formed, it wasn’t very good at preventing new clogs from forming.
Now, hydro jetting has become the predominant method for cleaning drains. This involves using a high pressure stream of water to blast all built up waste out of the pipes. This both gets rid of any current clogs, and prevents new ones from forming as easily.
This shows hydro jetting is the most ideal method for preventive drain cleaning.
Scheduling
Typically, it’s a good idea to schedule drain cleaning services every year, even if your drains haven’t showed any symptoms of developing clogs. This is the best way to make sure that waste isn’t allowed to build up enough to cause clogs in your pipes. Of course, you should still call for drain cleaning services as soon as you notice a problem with your drains, even if it’s between maintenance cleanings.
