Water Hammer
This banging or rattling noise is often referred to as “water hammer”, and it’s caused by a blocked vent pipe in your plumbing. Water moving through your pipes can create a vacuum, which is normally dispelled by a vent that pokes out through the roof near your faucet or plumbing fixture. However, when the vent is clogged, a vacuum can form, and this vacuum can create the hammering noise.
High Pressure
High water pressure is also a cause of loud banging and rattling noises in your pipes. If you’re noticing this noise when turning a faucet on or off, this is probably your issue.
Loose Mounts
Vibration or rattling sounds could be a symptom of a loose fitting or mount somewhere in your lines. Inspect all of the pipes in your home, including their fittings like corners and T-joints for any loose fittings. Not only could these be the source of the rattling, but they could also be the cause of a leak that’s doing water damage in your walls.
